New adventures in consulting...

Throughout my career, I've been blessed to work with incredible people for very notable companies -- General Electric Client Business Services, United Space Alliance, and Booz Allen Hamilton. When employed by these companies, I can thankfully say that I never felt like I was standing still. Instead, each day had its opportunities to learn, new people to meet, thought leadership to apply, and positive impacts to make.

As good as things have been, there comes a point in one's career when your experience, qualifications, and ambitions lead you to venture into something new. For me, I've decided to begin working as an independent consultant!

Entrepreneurship isn't entirely foreign to me. My 1st job was washing cars and boats for any customer close enough for me to get to with my bike. In high school, I tutored another student in math (she was a "D" student who improved to getting "A" exams). In college, I didn't want to work for minimum wage, so I took on 2 jobs -- as a tutor in Fortran Programming and as a web developer (the internet was taking off in those days).

The Fortran tutoring was the most lucrative at that time. It's truly amazing how much students will pay to get the assistance they need to complete their assignments when their grades (and graduation hopes) are on the line! Not only was the hourly rate wonderful ($20/hour), but all I did was sit in the adjacent chair and provide them guidance as they worked the keyboard -- and thankfully not everybody was a quick typist. I don't remember the name of that one last-minute procrastinator I helped with his final assignment, but I do remember coming home substantially richer that day!

All that being said, those jobs are clearly not the same as being an independent consultant. So what gives me such confidence to go on this new adventure?

Well, for one, I've been working as a government consultant through Booz Allen Hamilton for 16 years. And during that time, the nature of my work and skills put me in touch with SO MANY engagements. I'll expand on those details over time but suffice it to say for now that I've already built a brand within the firm, honed my presentation skills, developed my technical skills to the level that they would be difficult to be matched by others in the field, and have had one successful engagement after another.

I have the utmost confidence that I have everything it takes to be a successful independent consultant... and even more successful with the ability to expand on my client base and to break into some emerging technological areas (more on this in a future date as well). I've loved the people and companies I have worked for, but it's time to step out and see where the road leads.
